August 2026 Garden Update
Our little experimental vegetable garden at the Clair Nelson Center is growing! We’ve been diligently working to keep it watered, weeded, and fertilized with compost. The plants are doing well, besides being slightly stunted (which isn’t too surprising since this is the first year we have had a vegetable garden here). We will continue to work on building soil health using organic, regenerative, and permaculture techniques.
The garden has tomatoes, perennial onions, Bear Island flint corn, beans, peas, cucumbers, watermelons, peppers, lovage, chives, lettuce and more growing now. We’ve added comfrey around some of the fruit trees, and we have been mulching the garden as much as we can. We’ve already been using produce and herbs from the garden to prepare food for our weekly Youth Night. We’re looking forward to being able to use the garden more for community events.
