Celebrating a Lifetime of Community Service: Ron Van Bergan

Friends of Finland is honored to recognize Ron Van Bergan as this year’s recipient of the Sisu Community Impact Recognition Award, continuing a tradition of celebrating those who give so much to our community.

Sisu is often described as perseverance, courage, and inner strength. Here in Finland, we also see it in people who keep showing up, sharing their skills, giving their time, and caring for their neighbors year after year. Ron’s lifetime of service reflects that spirit.

Through his work with the DNR and nearly 50 years with the Finland Fire Department, Ron helped protect our community and care for our natural surroundings. For many years, he maintained the softball field at the Clair Nelson Center and took time to fly kites with children during summer camps.

Ron also organized groups to cut and deliver firewood to neighbors facing hard times, offering practical help when they needed it most. A veteran himself, he helped establish Legacy Lake for local veterans. We thank him for his military service and his dedication to supporting others.

In 1983, Ron and his wife, Brenda, placed a lighted cross at the top of Silver Hill. It has since become a beloved Finland landmark during the holiday season. For many people, its familiar presence brings comfort, memories, and a feeling of coming home.

Brenda deserves recognition as well. She has given countless hours of time and energy to community projects and events, including the Finland Centennial. Her contributions over the years have helped bring neighbors together and strengthen our community.

The Sisu Community Impact Recognition Award honors the steady care and commitment that help a small community thrive. Ron’s contributions remind us of the lasting difference one person can make by continuing to lend a hand.

Finland would not be what it is today without Ron and Brenda’s devotion to the place they call home. On behalf of Friends of Finland and our community, thank you both.
